Aerial View of our Ranch

Our ranch is located in the famous Santa Rita Hills.  The Santa Rita Hills is well known for its excellent Pinot Noir and the quality of the regions wines rival that of the best of Napa Valley and France's famous Burgundy Province.  Below is an aerial view of our ranch.  The green outline represents our property line.  We own approximately 168 acres and rent an additional 60 acres from our neighbor (not shown)  The ranch is located 6 miles West of Buellton right along Hwy 246.  Our farmstand, the Crossroads, is located at the intersection of Hwy 246 and Drum Canyon Road. Background on the Santa Rita Hills

In the early 70's, Richard and Thekla Sanford discovered that the Santa Rita Hills weather patterns closely matched those of France's famed Burgundy Province, making it ideal for growing premium Pinot Noir grapes.  Richard and Thekla started their first winery in the region aptly named Sanford Winery and Vineyards.  Since that time, many others have followed in their footsteps and through the efforts of the vintners in the area, the region, Santa Rita Hills, has been certified as an American Viticultural Area (AVA).  Today, the region is known not only for its renowned Pinot Noirs but for its Chardonnays as well.

Our Water

The water on the ranch is a unique resource that sets us apart from many other cattle ranches in California.  Our well draws water from a unique aquifer that extends from 900 to 1200 feet below the earth's surface.  This water is naturally mineralized and pure as only natural spring water can be.  With this water, we can irrigate our pastures with pure, clean water and tailor our watering program for the specific grasses that provide us with the best tasting beef.  We periodically test our water to insure its purity and thereby its contribution to the health of our soils and our animals.
